Broward Stakes Claim With Two Championships

Broward County high school baseball made another claim to Florida’s best region with back to back wins in the state championship finals on Friday.  Archbishop McCarthy edged Pensacola Pace 4-3 to match Miami Westminster Christian as the only teams to win three straight state titles.  The Mavericks were led by pitcher Andre Martinez who was solid for six innings before giving way to sophomore lefty, Brian Gonzalez to record the final outs.  In the nightcap, American Heritage breezed past Jacksonville Ponte Vedra 9-0 behind the 1 hit pitching of Alex Seibold.  It was the second state championship for the Patriots and the first under first year head coach, Bruce Aven.  Since 2003, Broward County has recorded 12 state champions and 3 national champions. Congratulations to the Mavericks and Patriots for proudly waiving the 954 banner on the victory stand!

NOTE:  Baseball 954 Magazine finished a perfect 4-4 in the state series bringing our 2012 playoff predictions to 52-10!  Our batting average of .838 places us #1 in the world predicting Broward high school baseball!

Patriots and Mavericks Advance to Finals…Championship Predictions

Plantation American Heritage and Archbishop McCarthy both advanced to Friday’s state championship games behind the arms of Shaun Anderson and Nick Travieso.  Heritage started the action on Thursday against the nation’s top ranked Tampa Jesuit and came away with a dramatic extra inning 3-0 win as senior, Brandon Diaz delivered a 3-run homer in the top of the 8th inning to advance the Patriots to the Class 5A title game on Friday at 7:00pm in Port Read more »

McCarthy and Heritage Play It Again…Predictions

The last two Broward County teams still playing in the 2012 high school playoffs have combined to win three state championships and two national championships in the past four years.  For Archbishop McCarthy and American Heritage, the opportunity to add more championship hardware to their already impressive programs is expected.  Archbishop will play Bradenton Lakewood Ranch at 7pm on Thursday (5/17) at Digital Domain Park in Port Saint Lucie in a 6A semi-final.  The Mavericks are making their fourth Read more »

Lucky 4! West Broward Upsets Flanagan

West Broward Celebrates

West Broward High School finally beat rival Flanagan in 2012, and they did it with the pitching of senior righty, Alex Zapata and a defense that kept the Falcons from the big inning.  Flanagan’s senior ace, Jose Mesa Jr had stifled the Bobcats with two no-hitters during the regular season, but barely escaped with a victory in the district championship.  Falcons coach, Ray Evans went with his ace one more time but the Bobcats were ready with a nail biting 4-3 victory at Flanagan High. Stormy Tuesday in Broward

The heavens, Zion Lutheran and St. Thomas all shed tears on Tuesday as stormy weather on and off the field made headlines.  Only one game was played as spring showers halted Regional Semi-final action across Broward County setting the plate for “Makeup Wednesday“. Fourth Time the Charm? Regional Semi Final Predictions

Heading into Tuesday’s Regional Semi-finals, Broward County is assured of at least 4 teams making it to the Regional finals with three of the six games being rematches of their district final championships.  West Broward gets a fourth chance to face Flanagan ace, Jose Mesa Jr. with Mesa winning all three contests.  But the last time West Broward collected 10 hits off their nemesis as they pushed across 3 runs and forced the Falcons to win in extra innings.  The fourth time is shaping up to be in the Bobcats favor as we predict an upset. Monarch looks to add their own playoff upset for a second week as they face Broward’s top ranked team, Nova.  The Knights will go as far as the Read more »

Broward 10 Make it to Regional Semi’s

HomeSix more Broward high schools advanced to the Regional Semi-finals next week to join their four brethren who already secured a place on Wednesday.  West Broward upset Coral Springs 3-1 and will play district nemesis Flanagan, a  6-1 winner over Douglas.  It will mark the fourth time the two will play this year with Flanagan winning all three prior games.  Also, advancing is Archbishop McCarthy after defeating Miami Hialeah Lakes 7-0, Coral Springs Charter who beat Miami Archbishop Carroll 3-0,  Zion Lutheran 5-1 winner over Miami Mater Academy, and Sheridan Hills Christian who upset Miami Champagnat 7-0.   In head to head match-ups with Palm Beach County and Dade County, Broward has represented well.  The 954 is 2-2 against Palm Beach and 4-2 against Dade for a combined 6-4 South Florida record.  Baseball 954 Magazine finished 9-5 in its quarterfinal predictions. Overall, we remain the top South Florida online publication with a 38-7 prognostication record so far in the 2012 playoffs.

Upsets in the Air in Regional Playoffs

Crusader Touki Toussaint

Coral Springs Christian stood toe to toe with defending state champion, Palm Beach Summit Christian for 7 innings but in the end poor footing cost the Crusaders a chance to dethrone the champs.  With bases loaded and one out in the top of the 8th inning, Summit Christian’s attempt at a suicide squeeze looked to have failed as Coral Springs Christian pitcher, Touki Toussaint sprang off the mound to make a nice back-hand flip to catcher, Zach Butler but Butler lost his way around home plate and caught the ball two feet outside the irregular pentagon.  Summit went on to add 3 more runs before lefty closer, Sam Murphy dropped the curtain on Springs Christian season.  In other playoff action, Nova and Northeast locked up into a classic pitching battle between Nova senior, Trent Monaghan and Northeast senior, Cory Korenic. Monaghan allowed only one hit to shut-out the Hurricanes while Korenic stifled Nova’s bats allowing three hits while giving his team a shot at Read more »

Orioles add “The Shark of the Caribbean” Fred Ferreira

The Baltimore Orioles upgraded its international scouting department by hiring legendary scout Fred Ferreira over the weekend. Executive V.P. of Baseball Operations for the Orioles, Dan Duquette, worked alongside Ferreira when both were with the Montreal Expos and was happy to announce a new relationship with “The Shark of the Caribbean” as Ferreira is affectionately known in baseball circles. Mr. Ferreira is the co-owner and director of Xtremeline Baseball School Camps, a free agent academy located in Weston. Mr. Ferreira’s official title with the O’s will be Executive Director of International Recruiting, congratulations Mr. Ferreira!

CATCHING UP WITH LEGENDARY SCOUT FRED FERREIRA

For legendary baseball executive and scout, Fred Ferreira, the opportunity to be immortalized for his body of work by the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame would be fitting, but his final baseball chapter remains incomplete.   As Vice President and Director of International Operations with the New York Yankees, Montreal Expos, and Florida Marlins, Ferreira’s scouting eye has been responsible for the careers of 57 major leaguers including Bernie Williams, Vlad Guerrero, Jose Vidro, and Roberto Kelly to name a few. Pretty impressive considering the closest competitor scout is at 33 MLB careers.

Former Creek Hurler Traded To Reds

Former Coconut Creek pitcher Matt Latos

San Diego Padre’s ace pitcher, Matt Latos was traded on Saturday to the Cincinnati Reds for a four player package that included two former 1st round picks.  The Broward County native Latos, posted a 9-14 record with a 3.47  ERA on a offensive challenged San Diego team.  Latos is penciled in as the number 2 starter on a Reds rotation that struggled to stay healthy in 2011.

Rizzo Traded to Cubs

The San Diego Padres announced on Friday that former Stoneman Douglas standout, Anthony Rizzo was traded to the Chicago Cubs in a four player deal. Rizzo becomes the second high profile Broward County baseball alum to make major league baseball news in the past month following on the heels of Coconut Creek star Matt Latos’ trade from San Diego to Cincinnati.  Former Boston Red Sox GM and current Cubs President, Theo Epstein originally drafted Rizzo in the 6th round of the 2007 MLB draft for the Red Sox and is known to be very high on Rizzo’s potential.  The past two minor league seasons has witnessed Rizzo averaging over 25 home runs and 100 rbi’s and a flawless glove in the field.  Wrigley field is certain to be very friendly to Rizzo’s ability…Good luck Anthony!

Can Douglas Deliver An Upset in 2012?

In the world of high school baseball, a strong argument can be made that the best playing area in the United States is Broward County.  With 50 public and private teams playing varsity schedules, Broward has accomplished a dramatic increase in state and national recognition in the past 10 years.  Since 2002, Broward teams have won 9 state championships and three national titles, pretty impressive considering prior to 2002 Broward had won only 1 state championship in 50 years.  The forecast for Broward County high school baseball in 2012 looks promising despite budget cuts and its effect on high school programs. Falcons Ready to Fly Again?

Baseball 954 Magazine spring high school preview for 2012 continues with a  look at:

8A District 12:

Flanagan High School baseball, under the direction of Coach Ray Evans has won three state championships and a national crown in the past seven years. In 2011, the Falcons finished with a 22-3 record and one step away from another trip to the state final four.  With Baseball 954 Magazine’s Offensive Player of the Year, Andres Sanchez, returning along with a pitching staff led by senior lefty, Michael Emigh, the opportunity for yet another ring is within reach.  Standing in the way of Flanagan’s road will be West Broward under new coach Sergio Ambrose, and Western High School with new skipper, Paul Barnes bringing a new energy to the Wildcat faithful.  Despite the lack of fall

Monarch and Northeast to Battle for District 15- 7A

Northeast lefty, Scott Green

The 2012 high school baseball season for Broward County begins February 13th.  We continue to look at the changes and potential outcomes for the spring.

District 15 – 7A

District 15 has the least amount of teams of all the newly formed districts.  Last year, Monarch found itself in one of Florida’s toughest districts (10-6A), having to face the power teams found in north Broward.  Today, Monarch stands as the favorite in a district made up of only four teams located primarily on the east side of Broward.  Under fifth year coach, Joe Franco, the Knights have the experience and pitching to hoist the district trophy for the first time in school history. Don’t expect Northeast to back down from challenging Monarch for the top spot as the Hurricanes graduated three starters from Read more »

Remember the Titans… in 2012

Nova's Troy Macero

District 16- 7A in Broward County promises to be one of the most competitive districts not only in South Florida but perhaps the state. Today, we look closer at the changes and projected finishes.

District 16 – 7A

For Nova and St. Thomas Aquinas, each baseball year brings up the argument of who will have the upper hand in claiming the district title. This year, the two powers advance to a new district with four schools with larger enrollments than they’re accustomed to.  Cooper City, Plantation, South Broward, and McArthur all played in Florida’s largest class last year, and should push to break the baseball stronghold Nova and St.Thomas have created over the Read more »

Is Third Time the Charm for Archbishop McCarthy?

Maverick 3 Peat?

Baseball 954Magazine spotlights District 15- 6A.  Led by defending national champion, Archbishop McCarthy, the district includes two teams (Pembroke Pines Charter and Ft. Lauderdale) who could press the Mavericks in 2012.  Ultimately, District 15 remains in Archbishop’s control but the race for the second seat will create some drama.

District 15 – 6A

Southwest Ranches, Florida is nestled on the western edge of Broward County and is home to America’s reigning top high school baseball team, Archbishop McCarthy.  The Mavericks picked up the title in 2011 along with its second consecutive state championship.  Heading into 2012, the Mavs return a solid pitching nucleus and defensive experience to challenge for a three-peat.  Led by senior pitchers, Andre Martinez and Nick Travieso, Read more »

Super Patriots!

In 2012, four team District 16 – 5A looks to be a two way race between national power, American Heritage and Pompano Beach.    Baseball 954 Magazine takes a closer look.

District 16 -5A

For new American Heritage head baseball coach, Bruce Aven, stepping up to a major league plate isn’t anything new.  The former Florida Marlin takes over a program vacated by Todd Fitz-Gerald, who can be found a few miles north in Parkland at Stoneman Douglas.   The Patriots return a strong nucleus of players that won their district crown in 2011 and finished with a 20-9 record.  Led by short stop Brandon Lopez, considered by many to be a Read more »

Will the Lions be King?

Heading into 2012, District 13 – 4A promises to be the top 4A district in the state of Florida.  The district’s seven teams combined to win 100 games in 2011, and should surpass that mark this year.

District 13- 4A

Mike Moss returns to lead Chaminade Madonna after spending the past three years establishing West Broward High School.  Moss’ last game with the Lions in 2008 was a playoff loss to eventual national champion American Heritage. Heading into 2012, the Lions hope to pick up where they left off in 2008 and find themselves with the talent to win a district crown.  Read more »

Can Coral Springs Christian Repeat?

Baseball 954 Magazine shines its spotlight on District 14-3A heading into 2012.  The five team race to the top will lead to an interesting spring but only two teams have what it takes to make a run for a state birth.

District 14-3A

Having won their district the past two years, Coral Springs Christian is loaded with talent and mound experience and could make a strong case for their first state tournament entry. Despite having three players sign with Division One programs in 2011, the Crusaders return a solid nucleus of experienced arms and have added talent to give Coach Matt Cleveland a third straight district title.  All county pitcher, Billy Atkins (7-1, 2.16 ERA in 2011) will lead the Read more »

Sharks warning!

Baseball 954 Magazine’s spring preview continues with District 13-2A, where three teams battle for elusive titles and respect: Deerfield Beach Zion Lutheran, Hollywood Sheridan Hills, and Posnack Hebrew.

District 13-2A

Last year, Sheridan Hills relied upon the Myer brothers, Ron and Chris to carry the weight on the mound and they didn’t disappoint by helping the Sharks record 12 wins. Graduation left only the younger Chris in place to improve from 2011.  But Coach Tim Talpesh believes Myer along with Thomas Davis and Jed Wilson are poised to take Sheridan Hills to their first title as the Read more »

Nova SE University Starts Strong

Nova Southeast University baseball is underway  in 2012 with a strong 4-1 start to the season.  The Sharks have outscored their opponents by a 43-3 margin, impressive by any standard.  Included in the wins were a three game sweep against Albany State, a 7-1 victory versus Florida Memorial, and a 1-0 loss to rival Barry University sandwiched in between.  Paced by the hot hitting of Scott Woodrey (.500, 8 rbi’s), Alex Marrero (.455, 7 rbi’s), and A.J. Regoli (.375, 2 hr’s), Coach Greg Brown has his team on track for a possible championship run.  Nova’s next game is Friday, February 24th against West Alabama at the Nova SE complex, start time is 6:00pm.

WEEK 4

  1. Nova  (6-0)…The Titans take over top spot because of the best pitching staff in Broward.  Nova has allowed only 2 runs through 6 games. Big test on Tuesday (3/6) against rival St.Thomas.
  2. Flanagan (5-1)…Falcons have outscored opponents 41-2 in their last 4 games. Jose Mesa’s 18 strikeout-no hitter versus Cypress Bay stands as one of the most dominant performances in Broward HS history.

  4. Archbishop McCarthy (7-2)…Tough loss to West Palm’s Summit Christian marks second loss to Broward neighbors. Tough games with Dade Pace and Goleman this week.

Baseball 954 High School Top Ten

WEEK 5

1.  Nova (10-0)… Titans continue to roll and remain the last undefeated team in the 954.   The green and gold’s Titan Classic win over West Broward in the championship game marks Pat McQuaid’s 801st win.  Road trip to North Carolina in April will test perfection.

2.  Archbishop McCarthy (9-3-1)… Mavericks are 2-2-1 over their last 5 games, but have played top competition including a tough 2-1 loss against Miami Westminster Christian.  ABM’s pitching is keeping them in games but the bats have to be better.

3.  Coral Springs ( 8-2)…The Colts seven game win streak was snapped in a close call with Miami Southwest. Still, Alan Sharkey and company have answered some questions with a strong showing in the Selective Invitational.

4.  American Heritage (10-3)… AH looked to repeat as Selective Invitational champs until Douglas upset the Patriots 3-2 in an emotional homecoming for Douglas coach, Fitzgerald.  Big game ahead on the 24th versus Miami Gulliver, should solidify post season hopes.

5. Flanagan (8-3)…Back to back losses in the Sarasota Classic drop the Falcons to fifth in the county.  Jose Mesa Jr. showed he was human after all by losing to Venice.  But, the big righty has only allowed 2 hits in the last 20 innings, and will push Flanagan into serious contention when its all said and done.

Football Great, Ahman Green, Starring in Real Life “Batman”

Former Packer Great, Ahman Green (center)

For former all pro running back, Ahman Green, training to achieve is a way of life.  The all time leading rusher for the Green Bay Packers was a two sport star growing up in Nebraska and California having success on the gridiron and baseball diamond. His work ethic led to an athletic scholarship to the University of Nebraska as a two sport hopeful, but Green soon found out the Huskers brain trust wanted only a commitment to football, thus baseball faded to the background as Green led Nebraska to two national championships in 1995 and 1997.  Read more »

Flanagan Rolls Over Cypress Bay

Flanagan's Jose Mesa Jr. after collecting one of his four hits

Flanagan High School used a nine run first inning as a spring board to crush district rival Cypress Bay High School in a mercy rule shortened game played in Weston. The once proud Cypress Bay program generated 1 hit on the night, which was 1 more hit the previous time the Lightning played against the more powerful Falcons.  Flanagan ace Jose Mesa Jr. pitched the no hitter on March 2nd as the “Big Green” won 5-0, this time around Mesa delivered with his bat as the senior went 4-5 with two doubles to lead the winners.  Cypress Bay drops to 7-7 on the year while the Falcons improve to 11-4.

Springs Christian Keeps Pace

CSCA's Dany "Touki" Toussaint at bat against Sagemont

Coral Springs Christian senior lefty, Ryan Cabreja pitched a complete game to lead the Crusaders to a District 14-3A win against Sagemont.  Cabreja allowed only five hits while  striking out four during the 10-1 victory at Tequesta Park in Weston.  The win keeps CSCA (3-3) within one game of district leader Calvary Christian (4-2) and one half game behind second place Westminster Academy (3-2) with two district games left to play.

Baseball 954 High School

WEEK 7

1.  Nova (11-1)… Don’t read too much into Nova’s one run loss to St. Thomas, a game which saw Titan ace, Troy Massaro, in the  field and not on the mound.  Opponents average 1.5 runs per game against the green and gold, which is always the calling card of great teams.

2.  Archbishop McCarthy (12-3-1)… Mavericks are on a roll since losing to Dade power, Westminster Christian 2-1 on 3/12. The bats have accounted for 44 runs during their five game win streak.  Showdown on 3/29 with district rival Pembroke Pines Charter and their lefty ace Alijandro Khan.

3. American Heritage (13-3)…The Patriots came up big against Miami Gulliver in a prime time game at Florida International University. A tough road trip to North Carolina should prepare AH for the post season.

4.  Coral Springs ( 11-3)…Upset loss to Coral Glades keeps the Colts from moving up but don’t expect another district loss the rest of the way.  Springs defense and pitching have to be more consistent heading down the stretch.

5. Flanagan (11-4)…The Falcons have rebounded after being swept during their west coast tournament.  Jose Mesa Jr.  continues to put this team on his back on the mound and at the plate, as he  makes a strong case for “Player of  the Year”.  Since returning to Broward, Flanagan has scored 44 runs while allowing 0 during their 3 game win streak.  Second showdown with West Broward on 4/5. PPO Bengal Devin Roche

For travel league all star, Devin Roche, major league baseball came calling quicker than he expected.  The PPO Bengal standout was recently a guest of the Baltimore Orioles at their spring home in Sarasota, Florida.  Young Roche made his bat boy debut under the watchful eyes of his grandfather, Orioles front office executive Fred Ferreira.  Expect a repeat performance in 2019.

Sharks’ Regoli Taking Bite Toward HR Record

Nova SE University's A.J. Regoli

Nova Southeast University senior centerfielder, Areo (A.J.) Regoli continues his torrid home run pace with 14 round trippers through 27 games.  Regoli’s batting average is an impressive .383 with a club leading 34 runs batted in.  The Homestead, Florida native is leading the college nation with his home runs per game average of .54 and is tied for eleventh in Division II with a 1.31 rbi’s per game average.  The all time record for home runs per game was set in 1981 by Bill Packer of Sacred Heart with a .73 clip. Regoli is a big part of why Nova S.E. is having a successful season with a 21-6 record half way through the season. You can catch the future big leaguer this weekend at the Nova complex as they host conference opponent Saint Leo Lions in a twin bill on Saturday.

Baseball 954 High School

Week 9

  1. Nova (18-1)…Pitching and defense win championships and the Titans are proving to be Broward’s best at controlling offenses.  Through 19 games, Nova has given up an average of 1.4 runs per game which is top in the county.
  2. Flanagan(15-4)…Like Nova, the Falcons have won seven straight.  Jose Mesa Jr. has solidified his claim to the best pitcher in Broward and possibly in Florida with an ERA of 0.90 in 54 innings of work while recording 99 strike outs.  The top question in the playoffs will be can the Falcons win without Mesa on the mound?
  3. Archbishop McCarthy(18-4-1)…Nick Travieso’s no-hitter against Dade power, Gulliver sends a strong message heading into the playoffs.  Unlike Flanagan, the Mavericks have a stable of arms that can push ABM deep into the playoffs. Read more »

District 16-7A Action

Broward high school baseball fans have witnessed exciting district playoff action this week with a few upsets and big steps for the favorites.  District 13-4A has lived up to its billing as the most balanced district in the 954 with the average run difference through five games has been 2.  The last two standing are Pine Crest and Coral Springs Charter, the #3 and #1 seeds respectfully. In District 11-8A, Douglas has regained respect with a convincing 10-0 win against rival and #2 seed Coral Glades. The Eagles face Coral Springs in a rematch of an old finals rivalry after Coral Springs disposed of Piper 10-0.  Other district championship rematches from 2011 include District 14-3A where Coral Springs Christian takes on Calvary Christian.  CS Christian’s Dany Toussant is a force Calvary Christian will have to neutralize if they hope to avoid last year’s loss.    District 16-7A might be a new district but the two finalists will be old foes St.Thomas and Nova. They each won their semi’s with solid outings, St.Thomas beat Plantation 8-2 while Nova shutout Cooper City 6-0.  Archbishop McCarthy will play host to Pembroke Pines Charter for the District 15-6A crown and home field advantage next week.  Zion Lutheran plays for its first District 13-2A title Thursday afternoon against Sheridan Hills and its ace Chris Myers.  The only two district championships not scheduled for Thursday is District 16-5A where American Heritage and Pompano Beach will clash Friday night in Pompano. And District 12-8A will see Flanagan and West Broward repeat their exciting championship game from last year as Jose Mesa Jr. looks to throw a third no-hitter against the Bobcats in 2012.

For the record, Baseball 954 Magazine has been perfect in its district final predictions.  Our overall crystal ball record stands at 20-2! To view our predictions, click this link: Read more »

Four teams were shutout in their title quest (Calvary Christian, Pine Crest, St. Thomas, Northeast), while two teams only managed 2 runs or less (Pembroke Pines Charter 1 run, Sheridan Hills 2 runs).  Douglas High School was the only losing team to score more than 2 runs, putting up 5 in their battle with Coral Springs.  Nova’s Dean Pelman and C.J. Chatham combined to limit St. Thomas Aquinas to 4 hits on route to their 2-0 win in District 16-7A. Coral Springs Charter’s Nick Scahill silenced Pine Crest’s bats by allowing only 3 hits and 0 runs in their 13-4A title game.  Coral Springs Christian made it two district titles in a row over Calvary Christian in 14-3A.  Pitcher Ryan Cabreja struck out 6 batters while keeping Calvary from touching home plate on the evening.  Archbishop McCarthy’s big gun, Nick Travieso allowed only 1 run on 2 hits while racking up 9 strikeouts as the Mavericks won District 15-6A.  Monarch lefty, Andrew Pierson frustrated Northeast hitters allowing 0 runs on 3 hits as the Knights hoisted their first District 15-7A trophy in a game halted after 5 innings due to security problems at Northeast High School.

Flanagan and American Heritage Win

West Broward High School finally made a dent in the Rolls Royce that had left tire marks on their collective backs all year. But in the end the Bobcats finished 1 run shy in their bid for District 12-8A‘s crown.  Flanagan’s Jose Mesa Jr. had previously no-hit West Broward twice during the regular season but the third try proved more difficult as the senior gave up 3 runs in the Falcons 4-3 win at Cypress Bay High School.  In Pompano, American Heritage pitchers allowed only 1 hit to Pompano Beach bats in their 7-0 win to capture District 16-5A. Alex Seibold registered the win pitching 5 innings for the Patriots.

Baseball 954 Magazine’s district playoffs predictions finished a perfect 9-9 in championship round play and 29-2 overall for a batting average of .935!
